Years and years of practice in "numbing out" the
pain can become a pitfall for trauma survivors. Oddly, the
same skills that at first actually saved them from experiencing
overwhelming suffering later become a trap. Persistent, unremitting
dissociative experiences feel like the "fog" that
won't go away. Learning to control dissociation with self-hypnosis
can return the person to a sense of control. A first step
towards this control, utilized by trained professionals, is
to visualize the experience with markers or crayons after
safety skills have been taught.
